Happy 50th Birthday Star Trek

So, today is the 50th anniversary of Star Trek’s premier back in 1966. I have no memory of life without Star Trek because, well, there wasn’t a life before Star Trek…for me at least. My 50th anniversary of being ex post utero isn’t for a few more weeks. So, Star Trek has been not just part, but a significant, perhaps the most significant part of my entire memory.

One of my earliest memories is watching the Apollo 11 lunar landing on TV. From that moment on, I was a space nut. All things space, then aircraft delighted me.

With that, my father loved Star Trek. When the programming gods deemed it appropriate to beam the show, our tv was turned to it. Pretty much without fail. Though MASH was a close second.

I don’t remember a first episode. Star Trek was always there. After falling in love with space, though, I would plop down when my dad had the show on. Trying to be non-obtrusive.

Getting older, I connected more and more with the show. The cartoon show helped, but only some. Even the passion that erupted in me for Star Wars didn’t dilute Star Trek. Maybe pushed it to the back for a spell. Battlestar Gallactica, Buck Rogers, no other show displaced it. I remember being asked, when I worked at Microsoft, “Star Wars or Star Trek”. I, in my style, answered “behold my gom jabbar!” I refused to choose one element of sci-fi geekdom. I love them all. But Trek has been there the longest.

After movies, Next Generations, Deep Space stations, journeys of the Enterprise and voyages with Voyager, my delight with the now universe of Star Trek grew deeper and richer. I adore them all.

Science Fiction forms the core of my personal mythology. Both Star Wars and Star Trek exist within the core, the deepest kernel. Delighting in the Jedi way, but also dreaming of attending the Vulcan Science Academy. Deep challenges will always be Kobaysi Maru, and not Jedi Trials.

So, a thanks to Mr. Roddenberry for bringing this whole thing to life. Also, the cast and crew of TOS, and all that followed. My life is unimaginable without you.

Mailchimp Issue: Solved

While trying to send out an email this morning I got stuck with this error message.

“Your list has an email type option, so the text part is required”

Mailchimp has settings for each list and the issue is buried in there.

  1. Go to “Lists”
  2. Select the list in question
  3. Then “settings”
  4. Then “List Name and Defaults”
  5. Uncheck “let users pick plain text or html”

That fixed the problem for me and let me send the email.

Travel Follow Up

While we were at Yellowstone we chatted with a cool family from California (mentioned them briefly in my last post). Well, after we left Yellowstone we headed to Jackson Hole. While walking around town I ended up seeing their van again on the side of the road. 

They weren’t around, or it would’ve been great to chat. The coincidence is striking! A very unique vehicle.

We’ve been exploring Yellowstone the past few days. I haven’t been here since the 80s, which adds some fun to the trip. 
Today had a few favorite moments. One, here I am in Wyoming snapping sone photos of bison and I end up chatting with a cyclist from Wallingford. Tim Tower is a great guy and I loved our far-too-brief chat. Maybe I’ll run into him again since he lives relatively close. We can hope!
I also ran into this wacky RV.


It had an old Mission Orange sign attached to, along with surf boards and stuff. Driven by a fun family with twin 12 year olds, I believe. Anyway, anyone know them and their back story, I’d love to learn more about them. These folks, too, have a Northwest connection. They were up here recently, including Port Townsend, one of my favorites. 
Anyway, if anyone knows them, let me know.
Anyway, just a update from the road. You can follow my adventures on Snapchat, too. At least once I reconnect to cell service.

Community members are invited to drop-in at the Verdant Community Wellness Center between 6 – 8pm on Tuesday, August 9th for a City of Lynnwood Community Meeting. On hand will be staff from Lynnwood’s Police, Fire, Parks, Planning, and Public Works Departments to share about current programs and to answer your questions.

This free event focuses on improving community and family safety. Featured activities include Ask a Cop, How to Avoid Scams (presentation at 6:30pm), and demonstrations on how to shut off emergency valves. Healthy and hearty appetizers will be provided. Free kids’ activities will be provided for youth ages 3 – 12 years old. Everyone who attends will be entered into a raffle to win a hiking fun-pack.

Department information will include:

  • Police: block watch, volunteer programs, crime prevention information
  • Fire: disaster preparedness and emergency shut off demonstrations – main water, electricity and gas valves
  • Parks & Recreation: Interurban Trail Improvements, Healthy Communities Initiative, Love Your Block neighborhood mini-grant program, and recreation programs
  • Public Works: Bike2Health bicycle improvements, 196th St Improvement Project
  • Community Development & Economic Development: City Center development projects, Future Link Light Rail info, and code guidelines on raising chickens and goats
  • Communication: Fair on 44th info, City eNews & newsletter

Kids Fire Camp is for kids ages 11-14 years old. August 16-19, from 8:00am-4:00pm. Cost is $120.00 per child, financial hardship scholarships available.

Love Thy Neighbor Peace Rally to be held at Trinity-Lynnwood July 21

In response to the numerous recent tragedies experienced in our nation there will be a “Love Thy Neighbor” Peace Rally, this Thursday, July 21st at 7pm. The rally will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church in Lynnwood and will be emceed by Lynnwood Council President and Pastor of Good Shepherd Baptist Church, M. Christopher Boyer. Guest speakers will include Mayor Nicola Smith, Interim Police Chief Bryan Stanifer, President of the Snohomish County Chapter of the NAACP Dr. Janice Greene, Councilmember Shirley Sutton, Reverend Paul Sundberg, Reverend Aaron Gaines, Reverend Steven Greenebaum, and Lynnwood resident Wally Webster. All are welcome to attend.

Malls are a’changin

Just read this Yahoo! piece about the decline of department stores in malls. North Seattle/greater Seattle has plenty of malls. This trend will change the dynamic of the region’s malls, and I think for the good. 

And so ends the weekend

They never seem long enough. So very much I wanted to do, and so very much of that left undone. A few highlights: 

  • I’ve been fighting some kind of bug the past week or so. I feel better now, but not 100%. Slept far more of today than expected. 
  • With that, today, for various reasons, I consumed way too much bad food. Felt queasy most of the evening. My bifocals didn’t help at all. Feeling better now, yet also exhausted. Yuck!
  • Yesterday I did finally replace my Samsung S5, which has been driving me batty. Got a S7. Quite happy so far, but I’m really only getting going with it. 
  • Saturday I went walking around Lynnwood. Up off of 40th between 188th and 196th, there’s a cleared play where a development of some stripe is going in. I’d passed by several times, so really wanted t take a closer look. The space they’re building out is HUGE! This will change the dynamic of that neighborhood. 
  • With that, I also explored the trails by the library and City Hall. I was delighted to find a plaque from Meadowdale (my high school) naming the trail “Mesika”. Seeing the connection filled me with pride. 
  • That makes me think of how the city has changed. It’s radically different than when I was a kid. Yet elements remain the same. I do expect Lynnwood will continue growing much more urban, for good and for ill. 
  • Anyway, I have photos and a little video. Once I feel better and more energized, I’ll pull together a vlog post.
