The Next Season Of Kombi Life Is On Youtube

I’ve written about the Youtube series Kombi Life before. I’m fond of these folks, love the show’s concept and delight in the way Ben and Leah are using all the tools this internet age is giving them to live out a dream.

The first series took them from south America to the Arctic Ocean. Now they’re heading for a global tour. They just posted their first season on Youtube, which starts with a west coast search the right VW Kombi to loading it on a ship in New York (and them into an airplane).

Go watch their current series (below). If you’re as charmed and delighted as I am, consider joining the “Kombi Crew” on Patreon, as us supporters are called. I hope to see you there!

A YouTube Series Featuring An Old Dream Of Mine: Kombi Life

I discovers this YouTube series last year: Kombi Life. These folks, Ben and Leah,  spent several years driving a VW van (Kombi) from South America to Alaska. I had the reverse idea a couple of decades ago. I researched the logistics for some time, deciding that this would have been very un-fun, so to speak. My decision on that was impacted by a friend who was driving a Baja bug to South America. He was robbed of EVERYTHING down in Chiapas. The ordeal of getting back to the States was, shall we say, unpleasant.

Also, since this was pre-internet, with no YouTube or Patreon, funding this was going to be a monumental challenge. I worked out that it would take several years of aggressive savings to pull it off. Then there were the logistics of repair….well, it became over the top.

So, the idea of a global adventure in a VW van faded. I still think it would be fun to travel the US in a VW bus. As much as I love the old Kombis I think I’d be more inclined for modern comfort and look at a Vanagon. But, anyway, I think it’d be a delightful way to explore the US. Whether I’d stop it and do something like Kombi Life, or just do tours…I don’t know.

Anyway, check out Kombi Life. They’re currently launching an around the world tour, driving from Arizona to Australia. It’ll be a heck of an adventure.

Spent the Day Exploring The Edmonds Shore

Edmonds is one of my favorite spots in the region. I love exploring and am glad I thought to grab my camera and share with you.

Death Cab for Cutie: “Gold Rush”

Death Cab for Cutie has it’s origins in western Washington. This song does a great job of capturing the current ethos in Seattle and the Puget Sound region, as this song is about Seattle (though this video was filmed in Los Angeles).

Anyway, I’ve had many moments of late like what Ben Gibbard’s lyrics describe. I lived nearly 10 years on Capitol Hill and First Hill. Anytime I’m there, now, I’m struck by how unfamiliar it all is. Yes, I celebrate progress, but also miss what once was.

A Short Post Featuring An Area DJ

Just a short post today.

My friend Emanuel is a DJ in the greater Seattle area. I found his most recent Soundcloud post delightful and thought I’d share this with you, good friends.

A great respite in this dreary spring of Seattle’s discontent

Quite the lovely day, today, north of Seattle. A wonderful sunny and warm respite in this gloomy spring of our discontent.

We have a project slightly north of Marysville, right off of Centennial Trail. So most of my team took a walk this afternoon. A delightful way to spend an afternoon.

The site’s going to have great views of the Olympics and the valley north of Marysville. It’s a really fun project. Been creative with AutoCAD and laying out lots. Getting to the site and seeing the land, the layout and flow is much more powerful than topographical lines on my computer.

Lots of wins. Though I did spent a chunk of this evening dancing with CAD. In all, a productive day, just in unexpected ways.

Discovered Two New Seattle Geektastic Events

Found these two while on Twitter today:

It’s great to find fun new events to add to my list. I do my best to keep this up-to-date. If you find something, let me know!

The Future Laughed At Me This Weekend

My wife and I were at a sandwich shop. I had cash in my wallet (which I often don’t), so pulled out a twenty. I’m aware of all the costs a small business absorbs with digital transaction, so was thinking it would be nice. And it was, but they were a bit puzzled. They didn’t have the change on hand to break the bill. And, very politely, asked if it was ok to pay via card. Which, of course, was fine by me.

It did strike me, though, as a sign of the changes the economy has gone through. When I managed cashiers, I had to make sure we had able cash and coins to make change. HAD TO! Running of of change was a huge failure, and pretty much ruined our ability to do business. Credit cards were a small fraction of transaction, most being cash or check. And now, I get the impression that the incident above almost went down like “oh, yeah, I should’ve hit the bank and got cash. Oops!” Followed by a “meh”. Maybe I’m wrong, but I got the impression cash was something of an inconvenience.

I expect many of these small business folks are simply embedding the costs of e-transaction into their model. So many people I know, myself included, rarely have cash any more. It’s probably far easier to let paper currency go the way of the dodo.

I guess it’s time to, finally, set up my Google or Samsung pay apps. Maybe even buy some Bitcoin!

Maybe….

Realizing my influence

I had a powerful realization today. While training some junior belts, I noticed one, a high-school aged young woman, was watching me closely. Everything I said and did was watched closely.  I saw how much potential I had to build her up, or tear her down.

It’s sobering and humbling. Knowing how nuch influence I have. I love the idea that a few well placed positives: words, smiles, can add so much to her life. And screwing this up can really mess things up.

Long ago, I pledged to be powerfully positive. Seeking, still, to master that. But I’m moving forward.

You ever had such an epiphany?
