Friends, a quick note about pedestrians and crosswalks

So, this afternoon I went for the briefest of walks in Marysville. And, not once, not twice, but three times drivers nearly ran me down in the crosswalk.

Dear friends, please let me remind you that pedestrians in the cross walk have the right of way.
Check out RCW 46.61.235:

“The operator of an approaching vehicle shall stop and remain stopped to allow a pedestrian or bicycle to cross the roadway within an unmarked or marked crosswalk”

Seriously, I just want to run my errands and not be put in the ER.

An Update On The Scriber Road Fire

To sum up: looks like the fire wasn’t criminal in nature. Which, for those of us who live in the general area, is pretty heartening.

Yet, without an “exact cause”, it’s hard to feel too releived.

Anyway, the full text of the press release is below:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Scriber Lake Road Fire Investigation Update

LYNNWOOD, WA (February 2, 2017) – The Lynnwood Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) National Response Team have completed their onsite investigation into the January 25, 2017 structure fire at the construction site of a senior apartment complex, located at the 19800 block of Scriber Lake Road. The cause of the fire appears to be non-criminal in nature, however the exact cause of the fire is still unknown.

The site will be turned over to the Fire Marshal’s Office and Building Officials who will work with the property owner to secure the scene and begin recovery efforts. Scriber Lake Road will remain closed until the site can be properly secured. We ask that the public continue to stay clear of this area until that work is completed.

Thanks to the Snohomish County PUD, power was restored to the Tanglewood Apartment Complex early yesterday morning and those tenants were able to return to their homes. The 36 units of the Lynnview Apartment building remain uninhabitable due to smoke, heat, and water damage.

The City of Lynnwood and the Lynnwood Police Department sincerely appreciate the assistance of the ATF’s National Response Team on this investigation.

Hey Edmonds folks, an update on the old Post Office site

​Over at My Edmonds News, they have  an update about the former Post Office site:

New residences and retail space coming to old Edmonds Post Office site

I walked by on Saturday; the building is nearly gone. They’re making short work. I expect the lot cleared this week. 

Looks like a nice addition to Edmonds, helping support the charm of down town. These apartments will be extremely convenient to all Edmonds offers. And it looks like they’ll add enough parking to compensate for the additional humanity. 

Developer by developer, lot by lot, Edmonds is evolving. As are Lynnwood and Mountlake Terrace. Each community is quite unique. I appreciate developers who attempt to capture the essence of the community in which they’re building.

New Construction In Lynnwood

I noticed a Proposed Land Use sign a few days ago here just north of Highway 99 & 176th in Lynnwood. Looks like NW Motor Sports is planning on moving there, or expanding their operations there. It’ll blend right in with the other car lots around there.

It will be nice for the land to be used, though. It’s a pretty highly valued lot and the owners would certainly rather have income offsetting the taxes versus sitting there vacant.

A Night With SteelMagic

Tonight I was lucky enough to hear the premier performance of Steel Magic Northwest. Started at my son’s school, it’s grown significantly. They’re now a full-fledged 501c3 nonprofit. It’s been a fun ride watching them grow. 

Steel Magic is an Edmond/Lynnwood based steel drum group. The music this evening was quite the blend of styles and composers. They covered Stevie Wonder and Tchaikovsky to original compositions by Gary, the director. 

I was quite impressed with their musical quality. A few performers have been with them the full life of this ensemble, but a good many started a few months ago. Their rhythmic and melodic quality were too notch. I’m glad they’re part of our community!

They’re working with Edmonds Seventh Day Adventist. This is where they performed last night. The mixed use room we were they played. was filled to its max. 

I suggest that you take time and check out their next performance.

TICKETS: $10 per person, payable at the door (children 6 and under are free). We are using a paperless system: concertgoers will receive a stamp on the back of the hand which will allow re-entry should you need to leave the building for any reason.

 

PARKING: there is ample free parking in the Our Saviors Lutheran Church lot, and overflow parking across the street.
COOKIE SALE! We will have a snack table with drinks and cookies for sale. We also have limited quantities of cookie dough available for purchase. You can buy baked cookies (2/$1) to taste, and then go home with your favorite flavor for easy holiday baking later!

Doors open at 3:30pm. This concert is General Seating, so come early to get the seat you want!
In order to help us set the right number of chairs and print the right number of programs, please RSVP at your earliest convenience with the number of people in your party.

Starbucks wants slice of the pizza business

I love Starbucks. They’re a great company to work for, and I think they’ve done an amazing job reading the economic tea-leaves and living ahead of the curve.

As for this, though. Not sure I agree this is the best move. Lots of pizza businesses out there. Can Starbucks really offer a unique take on pizza? I’m just not sold.

The coffee kingpin has targeted Seattle, New York, and Chicago for standalone Princi bakeries and plans to bring the Italian bakery’s focaccia and pizza to the company’s Reserve Roastery locations in New York and Shanghai. Princi food products also will be offered at Reserve stores, opening in Seattle and Chicago next year.(Puget Sound Business Journal)

A Seattle Comic Re-Discovery: Underground Seattle

While cleaning up today, I found this well outside of where it’s supposed to be…far from it’s bookshelf. So, I was delighted to find this gem and, so much for the work I wanted to get done, I set myself down and re-read it. Behold: “Underground Seattle”!

I found this gem at the Edmonds Bookshop, one of my uber-favorite bookstores. I bought this early this year, and it was sold in support of Independent Bookstore Day (April 30, 2016). Definitely a worthy endeavor! This little book was a solidly delightful read. Reminds me of the art you find in such magazines as The Stranger, and the Zines of 90s. I think it does a fantastic job capturing pieces of Seattle’s underground culture.

Though I’ve poked around, I couldn’t find a place to see or even buy a copy of this little guy. I intend to keep looking, though it might have been too limited a run. If you know, let me know.
