Bubble Run is excited to announce that it will be a part of Comcast Arena at Everett’s 10th anniversary celebration on September 21st.  Bubble Run is a family friendly 5k fun run, during which participants pass through walls of colored foam at each kilometer along the course.  Averaging about 3,000 participants, the event is open to all ages and abilities and is a unique way to encourage healthy physical activity.

“So much fun! I’m so glad that I picked this one as my first 5k; it got me hooked!” said one runner in Irvine, California.  Bubble Run is focused more on fun and accessibility rather than finish times.  “We wanted to create an event that was like nothing anyone had seen before, as well as an atmosphere that feels welcoming rather than exclusive,” said Bubble Run’s owner, Brogg Sterrett.

The Everett Bubble Run will also benefit the Providence Children’s Center through a limited partnership with the Providence General Foundation.  Everett’s Providence Children’s Center is one of the largest neurodevelopmental centers in the state of Washington, serving more than 350 children and families every week.

AND, the Comcast Arena is turning ten! 

To celebrate this milestone, Global Spectrum, management for the Comcast Arena at Everett, is throwing a 10th Anniversary Block Party and everyone is invited!

For just the third time in the building’s history, Hewitt Avenue will be closed off to accommodate the day’s festivities.  The celebration begins with the Bubble Run 5K at 9 am with an anticipated attendance of 4,000 participants. After the race, the party begins!

From 11 am to 5 pm, guests can expect great music from local bands, delicious food and beverages from food truck vendors, and interactive games the whole family can enjoy. The night continues when the Everett Silvertips take to the ice at 7 pm for their season opener vs. Prince George.

The Block Party is one of the first events slated for the upcoming year that will celebrate the building’s 10th Anniversary.

The activities are the result of an exciting collaboration with Experience Everett and the Snohomish County Tourism Bureau, both of which are encouraging out-of-town attendees to stay the night to fully enjoy the celebration, as well as the city’s many attractions.

Edmonds School District Superintendent Round Table : September 18

Join the Superintendent’s Roundtable – and a special request!!!!

On Wednesday of this week, we have our first Superintendent Roundtable.  After welcome and introductions, we will invite participants to share topics and areas of interest for this year’s programs.

In addition to this, Dr. Nick Brossoit has a special request for those who can attend the meeting.  There is a possibility of adding a Capital and Construction Bond measure to the February 2014 election, in addition to the Replacement School Programs and Operations Levy.  Dr. Brossoit would like to review this information with those who can attend and gather your thoughts and input in preparation for a series of public input session he will host on this same topic later this month.  If you can make space on your busy schedule; please attend.

“Our District , like most in the region, will be challenged with space needs within two years as we reduce class size in grades 1-3 and add full-day kindergarten,” Dr. Brossoit said. “We also need to address our highest priority facility needs that are currently backlogged, as well as safety improvements on all our campuses.”

 The Superintendent’s Roundtable is tomorrow, Sept. 18 from noon to 1:00 p.m. at the Educational Services Center, 20420 68th Ave. W, Lynnwood 98036.  Feel free to bring your lunch and we hope to see you there. We will also discuss topics for upcoming Roundtable conversations for the 2013-14 school year.

Shoreline Community College Faculty member Troy Wolff Dies in Seattle stabbing

Just read about Troy Wolff’s death. Troy was a long-time staff member at Shoreline community college, where I attending in the early 2000’s. Troy was a fantastic teacher and will be missed. I studied with him and thought very highly of him.

How did I choose Philip Martin from Compassion 2 One to come and speak at our meeting?  Last April, I heard a story on KIRO newsradio about a 15 year old that was sold for sex right here in our backyard.  Your eyes will be opened when you read this article that is available online from www.MYNorthwest.com

This story moved me to have this person come and share with our community about this horrible reality in our area.  Children as young as 12 years old are working as sex slaves in King County, the article reports, but I am guessing Snohomish County has some of the same statistics.

The 15 year old was from a typical suburban home, played high school soccer and was a violinist.  The 15 year old disappeared for 10 days and her father drove the streets of Seattle looking for their little girl.  Around 2 weeks later the police had found the runaway daughter looking completely different than when they had last seen her.

The most shocking part of the story; she had been held captive here in Everett.  She had been raped and forced to work the streets.  Please read the article to find out more about what could happen to one of our families if we do not educate ourselves and come and hear Philip Martin from Compassion 2 One.

Snohomish County Traffic Issues – Be Aware : Be Prepared

Westbound US 2 overpass opens Today

Snohomish residents have been anxiously watching the new US 2-Bickford Avenue overpass come together and your patience is about to pay off!  This morning, the new westbound overpass will open to drivers, and the eastbound on-and off-ramps will follow a bit later this month.   The new overpass will help reduce the risk of serious collisions by taking traffic over US 2, rather than across it. (ed: with all the issues with US 2 in recent years, this is a very welcome change).

Bickford Avenue is scheduled to reopen at 5 a.m. today after being closed to help prepare the roadway for the opening.  Westbound US 2 from SR 9 to the new overpass will be closed from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. Today through Tuesday morning, as will the ramp from SR 9 to westbound US 2, for some final work.  When you’ve had a chance to use the new overpass, let us know what you think!

SR 531 Arlington work continues
Crews continue to work to remove jarring bumps and cracked pavement on SR 531 from east of 43rd Avenue Northeast to just west of SR 9 in Arlington.  The overnight work has been noisy and we’ve had to do some full road closures, but drivers are already seeing smoother pavement and the work should be completed in the new few weeks, weather permitting.  The closures – which last from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. – will include 43rd Ave. to 59th Ave. (Tuesday to Wednesday), 43rd to 51st (Wednesday to Thursday) and 51st to 59th (Thursday to Friday) next week.  During that time they’ll be doing pavement repair, electrical work and paving.

SR 529 Snohomish River Bridge repair
The 60-year-old SR 529 Snohomish River Bridge is into its second week of repairs and southbound drivers out of Marysville should continue to use I-5 overnight.  The bridge will be closed from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. nightly Sunday to Friday to southbound traffic while crews replace heavy equipment needed to ensure that that drawspan functions correctly.  Southbound across the bridge will then be closed around-the-clock from 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20 to 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 23.  The drawspan will not open to marine traffic during the closure times.
