Social Media, Platforms and Control

I’ve been kept in the loop about the different groups encompassing the #StopeHateForProfit initiative and their meeting with Facebook a few days ago (here’s a recap of the situation if you need it). Other folks have written about Facebook’s strategy and risks, so I really have nothing to add there. However, one element has given me pause. What happens if the site collapses?

No, I don’t think that Facebook is going to fail simply due to this issue. However, there are a huge number of challenges that Facebook faces, from privacy to a lack of public accountability.  All of that makes me wonder what the breaking point will be? Ultimately, I believe Facebook’s Waterloo will be a combination of all the issues facing it, along with the natural conservatism that comes with huge success and an IPO, and the creation of a challenger. And I have something of a fatalistic view: that the end will come for it. Not that it will suddenly vanish. It’s a well-run business. However, I expect it will simply fade from relevancy once the new thing appears (i.e.: MySpace).

For me, this speaks to the importance of having my own website, my own place on the interwebs. One where I control everything. My own personal brand, I guess. Mainly, though, where my presence is independent of decisions made by some random group of individuals.

I realize that, in many ways, this is a fantasy. This site is hosted by a company, built on WordPress…external factors that I don’t have much control over. However, I can move my site to another host. I can port my blog from WordPress to some other platform if need be. Everything on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc, will simply vanish if those sites end.

Now, maybe this makes sense as I’m currently studying web development and design. As I was told many years ago, “having your own domain is the height of being a nerd” (I own that with delight). So, I guess this might be my inner geek. But I see deep value in having my own site, using it as a hub to the rest of my internet presence. And I see the value for you, too.

Watch “VANLIFE as a SOLO FEMALE TRAVELER” on YouTube

Alex is from Leavenworth, and worked at REI, so we most likely have some common friends. I adore Penny, her VW Eurovan, and she’s got the coolest dog.

Yeah, I dig vanlife. I don’t really want to LIVE it. I’d like a small van for weekend touring, but I have no desire or plans to drop everything and live solely out of a van. Now, doing something like that in Hawaii would be cool….and maybe I’d could get a trailer for the Lexus.

Anyway, check out Alex’s blog and Instagram pages.

SnowMageddon2019 and the Glories of Memes

I love some of the art that’s been crafted as part of SnowMageddon2019. I’ll update this post as I find more images.

Not really a meme, I just like this one.

Hackers claiming to have info for millions, including *gasp* celebrities

Hackers claim to have personal info of millions of Instagram accounts, including celebs

When I first heard the story (not this specific article), I believed that the photos were pulled from her phone. Which is what caught my attention.

Now I’m a bit puzzled. Ok, they posted nude photos of Justin Beiber on Selena Gomez’s Instagram account. Now, was the exploit posting to her account? Were these photos randomly findable ones under a Google images search?

If the hack enabled them access to photos stored on theses celebs phones, this seriously powerful. If this is true, Instagram and its parent Facebook, have a deeper reach into our data than many realize.

Else = a data skimming tool was able to glean passwords. Which is clever and all, but not that remarkable. One that gives remote users full, or at least significant access to a phone’s data? Now that’s something. Otherwise, though this sucks for the victims, is a relatively standard hack. And the dramatic piece is that he victims are, <insert gasp here>, celebrities.

Ah, the world’s gone completely mad

Reading about United’s PR debacle, and their CEO’s ratcheting up the tone deaf response, gets wearying after a bit.The tweet storm right now is simply horrendous. I’m glad I’m not with any element of their OR right now. Truly a Maalox moment.

But that’s all in Twitter. It’s just ugly right now. No one knows how to argue with dignity and grace.

Blindness to basic compassion and common decency. Rage filled vitriol, invective and brutality…The internet is loaded with the worst humanity has to offer.

I’m not sure of the way forward right now. United, I’m sure, is hoping this news cycle will be short, and memories shorter. Air travel as a whole has become an enterprise featuring dominatrix/management. Whip me, beat me, make me sit coach cross country. The

I wonder if we can move our society towards decency, respect and compassion. Note: I’m not saying “again”. I’m under no delusion that we ever were. Seems we have been better once upon a time. The

But maybe, maybe we can move towards a place where we value each other more than for a cheap shot, the few dollars we can eek out of them, if we can get any at all.

I hold out hope…most of the time.
